Hiding a Caster Table Entry

Under some conditions a SNIP operator may not want other unauthorized parties to be aware of every Base Station data stream their SNIP Caster provides.  SNIP provides a “private” Caster Entry option for this need which you can enable or disable (the default) for any Caster Table entry.  This option is not available on the free Lite model of SNIP.

Only those NTRIP Clients (users) who are aware of the “secret” mountPt name can connect to the data stream in the usual manner.  Other parties (unauthorized NTRIP Clients, or various web browsers and search engines) will not see any details about data streams for a Base Station marked as “private” in the returned Caster Table.

Aside:  Regardless of the “private” settings used, only those users whom you allow to connect to the SNIP node can connect to your Caster.  See the article on Managing Your Caster for instructions on how to open or close your SNIP Caster to users.

The decision to enable the “private” Caster Entry option is made for each data stream type during its setup process.   In each case, a simple checkbox switch is provided.  The default is to leave this UN-checked which means that the data stream will appear in the Caster Table when data is streaming from that source.  The value selected persists in the *.ini file, so (as an example) a data stream which is marked as “private” will remain so the next time SNIP is run.

Here are further instructions for this feature for each of the major stream types.

Serial Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option is set as part of the Caster Table set up dialog.

Relay Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option is set as part of the Relay Streams New Caster setup dialog.  Because a Relay stream will provide its own Caster Table Entry, the above dialog box cannot be used.

PUSH-In Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option is set as part of the Set Up Reservations dialog to create a reservation.  Press the Configure button next to the mountPt entry and an Edit Caster Entry dialog is displayed (the same dialog as is shown above for Serial data streams).  This option is not available for PUSH-In streams making connections without options.

PUSH-Out Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option does not apply.   This tab deals with sending data from your Caster to another remote Caster.  How the data is dealt with at the receiving side is up to that machine.

NEARest Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option is not supported.   Hiding this type of stream (which is itself made up of other Base Station data streams) makes little sense.  At this point in time, no one has suggested that is desired.  Note: Please do contact the development team at the support email if you feel this would be a desirable feature for you.

Raw TCP/IP Streams

For this type of data stream, the “private” Caster Entry option is set as part of the Edit Raw Tcp Server Slot dialog. The Configure button, next to the mountPt name opens the Caster Table set up dialog for reservations  (the same dialog as is shown above for Serial data streams).

Confirming You wish to Hide the Entry

Because hiding a Caster Table entry can create problems for your end user who may expect to find it, SNIP presents a confirmation dialog when the check box is initially selected. Be sure and inform the users you wish to be able to connect to this stream of the name you select, including capitalization details.
